Ize Iyamu PDP candidate heads to tribunal to challenge Obaseki’s victory

Obaseki won 319,483 votes to defeat Ize-Iyamu who won 253, 173 votes in the September 28 elections.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in Edo state, Osagie Ize-Iyamu has filed a petition challenging the results of the governorship elections.

Ize-Iyamu filed the petition before the Edo State Election Petitions Tribunal on Wednesday, October 19, to challenge the victory of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Godwin Obaseki.

“We have studied the situation and sure that we are ready to show to the world that the election was rigged. We are here to seek redress for the results which we strongly believe was rigged against us,” Ize-Iyamu told journalists in Benin.

“And I have to do this in agreement with my party and that is why you are seeing my chairman and other party chieftains here with me. And of course that gave them a huge encouragement which was on display on the very day of election when the people trooped out in large numbers to vote.

“Seeing that their mandate seems to be stolen we have to make do with our promise of defending their vote and that is why we are here at the tribunal today,” he added.

Obaseki won 319,483 votes to defeat Ize-Iyamu who won 253, 173 votes in the September 28 elections.

Edo Election Tribunal grants Obaseki permission to inspect electoral materials

The tribunal had on Tuesday granted the PDP and its candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu a similar.
The Edo State Election Petitions Tribunal in Benin permits the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Godwin Obaseki to inspect materials used in the September 28 poll.

The tribunal led by Justice A. T. Badamasi granted a motion exparte to Obaseki and the APC on Wednesday, October 12, 48 hours after it granted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu the same request.

Following the motion ex-parte filed by the APC on October 12, 2016, and marked EPT/EDS/GOV/2M/2016, the three-man tribunal directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to allow the party and Obaseki to inspect the election materials
On September 29, INEC declared Obaseki the winner of the election having secured the high number of votes - a total of 319,483, as against PDP's Ize-Iyamu who polled 253,173 votes.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state has claimed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, were the actual riggers of the September 28 governorship election in the state, The Nation reports. According to Oshiomhole, he is ready to prove in court how much the PDP profited from electoral fraud, adding that the Ize-Iyamu he knows is not worthy of 50,000 votes.

Addressing to All Progressive Congress (APC) youths during a road show, Oshiomhole said: “We are happy with the outcome of the election. We have gone to present the candidate to the Crown Prince, the Edaiken N’Uselu, and he (Obaseki) has been very well received. “Thank you for coming out to celebrate. I am sure we encouraged our opponents to go to court. We will be able to lead evidence to show how much they profited from electoral fraud because the Ize-Iyamu that I know is not worthy of 50,000 votes.”

He added: “So, it’s like an armed robber rushing to the police station with bullet wounds and claiming that he has been shot, whereas he was the one who opened fire on very innocent people. We will expose them where it matters in our courtrooms. Remain firm and resolute.

“For me, I am happy. The political funeral of the godfathers is final. There is nothing they can do to turn the will of God. So, this is our finest hour and I can’t wait to meet them in court.” Ize-Iyamu lost to his main rival and candidate of the APC, Godwin Obaseki with 66,310 more votes.

Obaseki polled 319,483 votes as against Ize-Iyamu’s 253, 173 votes to win the election.

Obaseki: we’ll deliver

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole said yesterday that the victory of the All Progressives Congress in Wednesday’s election has humbled Chief Tom Ikimi, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion and Dr. Raymond Dokpesi.

Governor Oshiomhole said Chief Tony Anenih narrowly escaped defeat.

He said the APC is committed to dismantling the rigging machine of those he described as political godfathers in the state.

Oshiomhole noted that Edo is the only state where election had been held in recent times without bloodshed adding that nobody died.

He said the victory had concluded his chapter in the struggle to end godfatherism.

He told reporters after the results were announced that “Over the last eight years, we have tried to orientate our people not just the voters but politicians that the season of election rigging where one or two godfathers wrote the results is over and we were committed to dismantling the rigging machine.

“We had a rerun in 2012 with all the godfathers on one side and new forces of change on my side, I won in all the 18 local government areas. Our people have spoken loud and clear that they believe in democracy, they just don’t want to be beneficiaries, they want to be the drivers of the process. This was showed by the way they conducted themselves on Election Day.

“It is outstanding and remarkable that tensed as the election was, out of 18 local governments, we won in 15 decisively. Those who were loudest in making noise had been revealed where they stand in relation with Edo people.

“We have humbled Chief Tom Ikimi even in the local government he claimed to have created. We defeated Chief Raymond Dokpesi in his polling unit, his Ward and his local government. That reassures that the ruthless deployment of media machinery is not enough to distort or the will of Edo people to determine their choice.

“In Okada, the political family that has boasted that they would continue to govern this state and even compelled the state to adopt them as the queen of England whose birthday must be celebrated. In Okada, the APC was the preferred party by the people than that family in Okada.

“There is something unique in the way things have turned out. In Esan land, the senatorial zone of the PDP godfather, we won two out of the five local governments. We gave him a fight that he managed to escape. He used the factor of his age to play on the emotion of the people. It is a victory for the people of the state. Edo people are now proud they can now determine who rules them and no one godfather can choose a leader for them. When you look at the propaganda, you will think we had fallen for the lion”

BREAKING: Godwin Obaseki wins Edo election

Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been declared the governor elect of Edo state, following the conclusion of electoral proceedings.

Godwin Obaseki has been declared winner of the Edo state election 2016.

Nineteen candidates vied for the ticket to the Government House, however, the main contest was seen between Godwin Obaseki of the APC and Andrew Ize-Iyamu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) There was a heightened sense of suspense in Benin, even as final analysis of collations for the Edo election was ongoing.

After collation from 17 local governments, a final report from Ovia South West showed that the APC had 12,820 votes while the PDP had 8810, bringing the sum total of votes to 319, 483 and 253173 respectively.

According to statistics, the All Progressives Congress comes up top with a difference of 66,310 votes, however, some analysts raised fears that the election might take a new dimension if the number of votes rejected across the LGAs becomes a thing to take into consideration.

Supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have staged a protest against the outcome of the Edo state gubernatorial election. The protest was carried out in front of the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday, September 29. The supporters carrying placards claimed that Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the PDP was the winner of the election as against reports that Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress was in pole position to win the election.

9:08am: INEC begins proceedings to announce the election results. Shortly after conclusion of elections in all parts of Edo state, some unofficial results began to trickle in, with the PDP taking an initial lead, and the APC taking over somewhere midway.

BREAKING: PDP rejects results of Edo election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the result of the Edo state governorship election currently been announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking at a press conference, the PDP state chairman, Dan Obih, said the results it’s agents collected from all the wards as at last night is totally different from what is been announced by INEC. Also speaking, the PDP candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu said President Buhari who was a product of free and fair election could not conduct a free and fair election.

He equally said: ‎”contrary to claim that we brought 8000 militants, it’s clear that nothing like that happened. ‎The delay in the announcement of the result by INEC has showed that the result was predetermined and written.

“What is been announced is contrary to the turn out of voters, even the national chairman of the APC acknowledge this fact. But I tell you, when the official result is announced, it will be clear that result does not match the turn out. Ize-Iyamu said the election was marred with irregularities stressing that some security agencies collaborated with INEC officials to disenfranchise voters in some parts of the state.

Speaking categorically, he said APC could not have won Oredo LGA despite evidence of violence at George Idah Primary collation centre‎ by APC thugs. When asked what his next line action is, ‎Ize-Iyamu said his team will examine all the result and publish in the newspaper what should have been the result.

In another development, the candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Osaro Onaiwu, has called for the cancellation of the Edo state gubernatorial election which is currently undergoing collation. Onaiwu who admitted that “the turnout was impressive because Edo people wanted change,” said the exercise was fraught with financial inducement and violence.

Security agents take over INEC office in Edo as official results roll in (Photos)

Security agents have been deployed massively to INEC office in Edo state as the returning officers begin presentation of the early results from polling booths across the state. The security officials, who were mostly heavily armed, were a combination of mobile policemen, regular police officers and officials of the Nigerian Security and Civil Service Corps. There are also members of the Nigerian Army who are also working with the other security agents.

The heavy presence of security officials may not be unconnected with the reports of attacks in some parts of the state during the polls on Wednesday. There were claims of ballot snatching and attacks on observers and supporters of opposition parties at some polling booths.
Meanwhile, the People Democratic Party has claimed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is planning to rig the result of the gubernatorial election in Edo state. The party, in a statement via Prince Dayo Adeyeye who is its national publicity secretary, it alleged that the APC was planning to rig the election and Governor Adams Oshiomhole was already working towards that.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on Nigerians to disregard results being posted on the social media on the Edo State governorship election.

 

The Commission added that only results released by the it or its designated officials are genuine.

“It has come to the attention of the Independent National Electoral Commission that some persons, especially on social media have started publishing result of the Edo governorship election, such result should be disregarded as only INEC or its designated officials can do so,” INEC said in a tweet.
