Liverpool legend Gerrard quits soccer

Former Liverpool and England captain, Steven Gerrard, has retired, ending a 19-year playing career.

Gerrard, 36, played 710 times for the Reds, winning eight major trophies, but joined MLS side LA Galaxy in 2015.

He is England’s fourth most-capped player with 114 appearances and captained the “Three Lions” at three of the six major tournaments the side featured, the BBC reports.

“I feel lucky to have experienced so many wonderful highlights over the course of my career,” Gerrard said.

“I have had an incredible career and am thankful for each and every moment of my time at Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy.

“I fulfilled my childhood dream by pulling on the famous red shirt of Liverpool.”

Gerrard had been linked to a job in management with MK Dons after announcing he would leave LA Galaxy, but said on Wednesday the opportunity came “too soon” for him.

On Thursday, the midfielder said he will take time to consider his options before making an announcement on the next stage of his career “very soon,” adding: “I am excited about the future and feel I still have a lot to offer the game, in whatever capacity that may be.”

Mourinho Shocks Manchester United Players with 'Strange Behaviour' Following Chelsea Disaster

This may be the most turbulent period of Mourinho's coaching career following his questionable approach to his team after an embarrassing defeat by Chelsea.
The Portuguese coach, Jose Mourinho has apparently shocked his players by not leading training himself, preferring to sit in his office and watch from a distance

Manchester United's stars are shocked at Jose Mourinho's "cold" and "distant" approach in training following their 4-0 loss at Chelsea, according to The Times.

The Portuguese suffered his heaviest-ever Premier League defeat on Sunday at Stamford Bridge and blasted his side's "incredible defensive mistakes" after the result.

Mourinho kept up his line of accusation ahead of their EFL Cup fourth round clash against Manchester City in midweek, calling the players "boys", and it appears his approach in training reflects his attitude towards his squad at the moment.

It is claimed that it is Rui Faria, Mourinho's assistant, who is leading training at the club's Carrington complex. Mourinho, meanwhile, is alleged to watch from a distance or work in his office most of the time.

The cold treatment has reportedly come as an unpleasant surprise to those who thought Mourinho would give them special attention.

The Times claims that Mourinho has no intention of changing his approach to the Man Utd squad he inherited from Louis van Gaal any time soon either.

Premier League Mkhitaryan, Shaw fit for Liverpool

Jose Mourinho says Manchester United have no injury fears ahead of the trip to Liverpool, meaning Luke Shaw and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are back.
Manchester United duo Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Luke Shaw are fit to return in Monday's Premier League clash against Liverpool.

England full-back Shaw has not featured since the 3-1 defeat to Watford on September 18 as a result of a muscle complaint.

Mkhitaryan, meanwhile, was last involved in the 2-1 derby loss at home to Manchester City on September 10, having battled to recover full fitness following a thigh injury.

But United boss Jose Mourinho has indicated both players will be available for the meeting at Anfield, according to MUTV, while there are no further injury concerns following the international break.

Mourinho insisted he has no issue with players leaving for international matches during a busy stage of the season, and was especially pleased to see Ander Herrera earn a first Spain call-up, while Jesse Lingard made his first two appearances for England.

"I like my players to go to the international teams," Mourinho said. "I know that other managers don't like it. I know that other managers they even try to stop them to go.

"I know there is sometimes also a bit of a fake injury to stop people going. I'm not like that. I'm always very proud of my players to be selected.

"One was a debutant, the other was a call-up to the Spanish team. It's obviously important for them and it's good for me and I think also the club feels proud of it."

Simeone Athletico Madrid manager backs Griezmann stance on Ribery

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has hailed Antoine Griezmann's growing maturity after the France international laughed off questions over his ability.

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has hailed Antoine Griezmann's growing maturity after the France international laughed off questions over his ability from Franck Ribery.

Griezmann was top scorer and named best player at Euro 2016 after his six goals propelled France to the final, where they lost to Portugal.

His international exploits came on the back of another wonderful season for Atletico in which he scored 22 league goals as the Rojiblancos narrowly lost out to Barcelona in the race for the title.

There has been no let-up this season either with the former Real Sociedad man top of the Pichichi standings with a further six strikes to his name.

Griezmann's excellence has failed to impress Bayern Munich winger Ribery, however, who says the forward needs to produce that level of performance over a longer period.

"For me, you have to prove yourself over 10, 12 or 15 years if you want to be among the best. Do that and then I will congratulate you," said the Bayern Munich winger.

Griezmann issued a measured response, telling Eurosport: "I will continue working. As he says, we'll see at the end what kind of player I am, but I know I'm on the right track.

"Everyone has an opinion. To my father, for example, I'm the best player in the world. To the fans of Atletico, too."

Griezmann's words were, according to Simeone, another indication of the 25-year-old's increasing stature at the Vicente Calderon.

The Argentine told a news conference ahead of Saturday's home game with Granada: "He [Griezmann] is a guy who has very clear ideas.

"He has matured very well in the time he has spent with us. I am not worried that there is pressure on him.

"I cannot observe the opinions of everyone but I always respect opinions. And I thought Griezmann responded brilliantly to Ribery. There is nothing more to say on that."

Atletico lead the Liga table after seven games on goal difference from city rivals Real Madrid, and will expect to maintain their unbeaten start at home to a Granada side without a win.

Simeone was understandably preaching caution, however, with Lucas Alcaraz taking over at Granada earlier this month.

"We know their coach has certain characteristics, and is very competitive," he added.

"It has always been that way when he has faced us and Granada have players with strong offensive qualities, guys who play well from midfield forwards.

"We must focus on us. We do not know what they will do because of the coaching change. We have to start strong, it's key to these rivalries."

Zambia 1 Vs Nigeria 2 Iwobi, Iheanacho score in Super Eagles win

Two first half goals by Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho gave the Super Eagles a 2-1 win over Zambia on Sunday, October 10.
Nigeria squared up against Zambia in the match-day one of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Ndola and started with the two most in-form young players in the Premier League.
Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr deployed Iwobi at the left wing while Iheanacho played between the midfield and striker Brown Ideye.

The Arsenal and Manchester City players repaid Rohr’s faith as they impressed in the win.
The Super Eagles playing in their traditional away kit started on the back foot as the Zambians dominated the early proceedings.

The Chipolopolo got their first chance in the second minute with Super Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme saved a dangerous corner that was heading inside the next.

Kenneth Omeruo stopped a Zambia attack after captain John Mikel Obi was dispossessed in the 11th minute of the game.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria got their first chance in the 15th after Iwobi played a fantastic pass to Brown Ideye.

The striker was one on one with the goalkeeper but his effort went wide before he adjudged to be offside.

Elderson Echiejile stepped in to clear the lines in the 19th minute as the Zambians kept pressing the Super Eagles.

Moses Simon has a chance to put Nigeria on the lead but failed to hit the target after he was cleared on goal.

Iwobi gave Nigeria the lead as he pounced on a loosed ball from a throw-in to shoot past the Zambian goalkeeper.

The Chipolopolo nearly got their equaliser but Ikeme was in the right place to save a close-range header.

The Super Eagles got their second in the 43rd as Iheanacho dribbled the goalkeeper to tap into the net after he was played in by Ideye.
The Zambians dominated the second half in search of a goal but Ikeme was on hand to save some goal-bound balls.

The Zambian goalkeeper also saved some couple of shots as the Super Eagles attack on the counter.

He tipped over a dipping shot from Mikel Obi to keep Zambia in the game.

Zambia got a goal back in the 70th minute through Collins Mbesuma who capitalised on a slip from Super Eagles defender Omeruo to drive a low shot past Ikeme.
The Super Eagle, however, held the 2-1 lead for the remaining 20 minutes of the game to take all the tree points.

They host Algeria next in their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Eagles will deliver in Ndola – Rohr

Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr, has expressed optimism that the team would deliver in Sunday’s 2018 World Cup qualifier against Zambia in Ndola.
Rohr said during the team’s interactive session with journalists on Friday in Abuja that Nigeria would get an outright victory over the Chipolopolo in the encounter.

He said Nigeria was blessed with abundant talents and assured that the players presently in camp were capable of defeating any team.

The German tactician revealed that Arsenal forward, Alex Iwobi, would lead the Eagles’ attack against the Zambians on Sunday.

He assured that as professionals, the players would adapt to the bad playing pitch in Ndola.

“We have six new players and three will perhaps start the game,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted Rohr as saying to journalists on Friday.

“You know that a player like Iwobi was injured last time but we all know that he is a good player and I hope his integration in the team will produce result in Ndola.

“The training has been good and we try to help and bring him into the team, he knows how we played in Uyo and we cannot change tactically because the time is short.

“We have other strategies but similar to what we did in Uyo, and I count on Iwobi to help us win the game in Ndola.

“We must avoid the mistake in Uyo where we had 27 shots on goal but converted only one and this means that we must have a good attack and players who can score.”

He also said the technical crew had watched the latest video of the Zambian national team.

Eagles can’t stop our World Cup ambition – Zambian coach

With just 48 hours to the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Zambia’s Chipolopolo, the coach of the southern nation, Wedson Nyirenda says they are poised to pick the sole slot from the group which has the continent’s powerhouses – Nigeria, Algeria and Cameroon.

The coach told The Post of Zambia that having put the AFCON miss behind them as their ultimate aim is to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in Zambia’s history.

“We just have to qualify. I have always said even if we are building the team, we have to qualify for the World Cup for the first time. The arrival of professionals has boosted morale in the team, we are looking good with the brotherliness I am seeing in the team. We are going to maintain Rainford Kalaba as captain,” Nyirenda said.

He however, insisted that Rainford Kalaba remains the team’s captain.

The tactician says it was an easy decision for him to convince Russia-based midfielder Chisamba Lungu to end his brief self-imposed exile from Chipolopolo duties.

Speaking during the training session on Wednesday, Nyirenda said the arrival of professionals had boosted morale in the team.

And Nyirenda said it came as a surprise for him when he heard that Chisamba had excused himself from the national team.

Chisamba, a Nyirenda protégé from the Under-17 days, has been a consistent member of the Chipolopolo side that won the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations but announced his retirement from international football saying it was frustrating that he was not seeing enough game time during the national team’s 2017 AfCON campaign that ended in failure.

Following his appointment as interim Chipolopolo coach last month, Nyirenda recalled the Ural FC captain who unconditionally accepted the invitation.

“Chisamba is a good player, that’s why it came as a surprise to me when I heard that and it was easy to call him and tell him. Whatever the issues he had with the team I had to call him and say, ‘this is your team’,” Nyirenda said.

“We are all here to do national duties and he accepted without any conditions he is just coming to do work.”

6 Things we learnt from Guardiola's victory over Mourinho #Manchester derby

The Manchester derby has been won and lost with the blue half of the city claiming the bragging rights over their less noisy neighbours. The agelong rivalry lived up to its billing as Pep Guardiola again showed Jose Mourinho why he has been his nightmare over the years when they both clash.

No doubt, the contest never looked as if it was swaying either side of the coin until referee Mark Clattenburg blew the final whistle in fifth minute of injury time. We made a live coverage of the keenly-contested match and presents six things we learnt from the Manchester derby.

1. A game of thrones

The match was definitely a contest of who rules the city of Manchester as the game met all expectations. Both teams showed the stuff they were made of from the blast of the whistle and it was an end-to-end encounter.

City outplayed the Red Devils by the skin of their teeth at Old Trafford and have shown that they have what it takes to go all the way to win the Premier League.

2. City were technically the better side

Manchester City had more depth in the match than their opponents and they played with caution without taking anything for granted in all departments of the team.

Kevin De Bruyne posted a man-of-the match performance as he scores City’s first goal

Sometimes City did not have to worry about their losing possession in critical areas of the midfield as they stood tall in defence without being in a hurry to clear the ball from dangerous areas.

3. ‘Suicidal’ Bravo

This man is the reason Joe Hart was axed from the Manchester City squad but his debut appearance raised lots of questions about his keeper-sweeper role as he gifted a goal to the home side.

Bravo could not handle the ball as he gifted United a goal One three occasions he nearly put United back into the game with his indecisive clearances. He was responsible for the solitary strike by the home tea, but inspite of his loss, the opposite number one was fantastic on the evening.

4. The game was won in the midfield

Surprisingly, the world’s most expensive player, Paul Pogba was second best to David Silva all day as the Citizens had a commanding performance in midfield.

Fernandinho, De Bryune, Nolito, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane were all in control of possession forcing United to backtrack and re-group in the match which gave City added advantage all through the match.

5. Iheanacho/Rashford

The argument is not who is the better player for the Manchester sides, but how they have contributed in deciding the game at the long run for their teams.

Iheanacho scored and made an assist while Rashford was also brilliant on the night, taking on defenders plus scoring a disallowed goal in the derby. The match undoubtedly produced two of Europe’s future stars in the match with the quality and technical abilities both teenagers have shown so far.

6. The Guardiola streak

Guardiola has continued his winning streak over Mourinho with his first derby win and his sixth consecutive victory over his eternal rival and proved it was no fluke.

Guardiola had the last laugh at the Manchester derby

Mourinho on the other hand, has seen why the Spanish tactician always edged his tactical brilliance when they both cross each others part.

Inspirational! Footballer With No Legs Wants to Play Professionally (Photos)

A young man who lost his legs to a fatal accident has continued in his hopes of playing professional football in the nearest future.
Footballer, Mohammad Abdullah

A Bangladeshi football fan who lost both legs in a horror train accident has dreams of competing professionally like his idol Cristiano Ronaldo.

Mohammad Abdullah, 22, lost his legs on a speeding train ten years ago. But now the young man, who also works as a luggage porter at a ferry station is making a name for himself with his football skills.

He said: “I never thought I’d be able to walk, never mind play football. When I was bound to that wheelchair I feared I might have to spend the rest of my life trapped. But eventually I decided to try and do without it. I was determined to be independent so I began trying to walk.

“I was tired of seeing myself in that helpless condition. I faced difficulties initially but succeeded eventually. Now I can walk, work and play football like other people.”

Abdullah was abandoned by his mother when he was just seven and was raised by his father and step-mother before running away from home.

“I missed my mother so much I ran away from home,” he said. “I was angry and helpless. I lived on the road and begged for a living and after a couple of months I found a home with my grandmother.”

In 2001, the young man was travelling on a train and was trying to reach another carriage when he slipped and had his legs trapped under the wheels of the speeding machine. He was rushed to hospital but eventually lost his legs below the thigh.

According to Daily Mail UK, a football coach who later discovered him has helped him pursue his football passion and encouraged him to practice.

Abdullah now plays football at the National Stadium in Bangladesh on a basic level and despite having no legs he can play a good game.

“People are amazed when they see me play football. They ask: “How can someone play football with no legs?” But I show them the strength inside of me. My disability is not a barrier to succeed and be happy,” he said.

Revealed! How Siasia and Team Shared $390,000 Gift From Japanese Billionaire

The coach of the U-23 team that won bronze at the just concluded Olympics in Brazil has opened up on how they shared the money given to the team by Japanese billionaire.
Mikel Obi, Dr. Katsuya Takasu and Coach Samson Siasia

Coach of Nigeria's U-23 Bronze winning team at the just concluded Rio 2016 Olympics, Samson Siasia has given details how the team shared the $390,000 given to them by Japanese billionaire, Dr. Katsuya Takasu.

Siasia described the criticism the team has received over the money from the Nigerian Football Federation as unwarranted, saying that the investigations called for by the top dogs in the federation were unnecessary.

“What actually happened is that the man was just curious how a team that was neglected and abandoned could arrive Rio under five hours and defeat the Japanese team that had all they needed and have been put together for over three years, that was his amazement.” Siasia said explaining what transpired.

He continued,“These guys who are saying they want to do all manner of checks, what have they done for us? Do you know that since we returned, nobody from the NFF or Ministry has called us to say that we did well. The president came and just talked and that was it, well it is not the first time he will be talking.

“When players don’t even have $100 dollars in their pocket and you want to come and preach to them.” Siasia said the entire amount of $390,000 was shared equally among all the members of the team including the supporting staff.

“The Japanese benefactor said $200,000 and $190,000 was supposed to be for bronze medal and it was split among the players and officials equally. It is not my personal money and this must be made clear.

“What I got was what every other player or official in the team got about $14,000 dollars each. The man came to Salvador where we played and gave $200,000 as draft to me and $190,000 to Mikel because he cannot write cheque to every member of the team, he made it simpler so that we all can share the money and now we are paying to the individual accounts of the boys.

“So make this issue clear to everybody that has been following it, the money was never meant for me or Mikel alone but for the entire team including the doctors and other backroom staff,” Siasia added
