JAMB sets November 30 deadline for admission to schools
– JAMB registrar insists that post
– UTME will not be one of the requirements to offer candidates admission
– The professor informed that schools which are yet to update the requirements for the 2017 brochure should do so quickly
– He explained that the examination body is ready to listen to legit requests of stakeholders
Students seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria have been given a lifeline until Wednesday, November 30, 2016.
According to information obtained by Information Nigeria, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) stated on Friday, September 16, that all admissions to universities, polytechnics and colleges of education should end at the stipulated time.
Speaking at the University of Abuja, venue of an Extra-Ordinary Technical Committee Meeting on 2016 Admissions to First Choice Institutions, the JAMB boss noted that the board was ready to attend to authentic requests of everyone involved in ensuring the efficiency of the examination body.
“The First Technical Committee Meeting was held in Bayero University, Kano, from August 22 to August 26, where institutions were expected to make submissions for their first choice admissions to admissions’ panels at the technical sessions. “However, some institutions informed the meeting that they were not ready to make submissions as internal processes leading to the exercise had not been completed.
“The affected institutions requested for an earlier special date than the date for the Second Technical Committee Meeting scheduled for November 14 in Owerri, Imo State,” he explained.
Speaking further, Professor Oloyede said: “I need to re-state my earlier submission that the senate and the academic boards of the institutions have the primary responsibility of recommending candidates to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board for admissions. “JAMB will not initiate or insert any candidates but will, as expected, ensure that no candidate is unjustly treated by any institution.
“The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board is thus a referee for justice, equity and standards.”
While informing that other admission processes remain intact, the registrar explained that there should be no post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) test and that institutions which were yet to complete their requirements for the 2017 brochure to do so.
Recall that the admission process for universities this year has been fraught with several problems. From the banning of the normal post UTME process of admission, to the introduction of the admission screening method, among others. Students have had to jump through several hoops, but finally many have made their through the admission screening onto the admission lists.
